EndNote: Introduction

Software that helps with your referencing. In this guide learn about EndNote, sign up to an EndNote class and download EndNote (UWA staff and students only).


EndNote is a software program and a Web application which allows you to:

  • Create and organise a database of your references
  • Store PDF documents and other files with your references 
  • Share references with other EndNote users
  • Automatically format in-text citations and bibliographies in your chosen reference style

Note: EndNote is not a substitute for knowing how to construct the reference style you are required to use for your courses or publications. For more information on reference styles, see Referencing guides

On Your Desktop and Online

EndNote exists in two versions

  • EndNote Desktop
  • EndNote Online

When you load EndNote Desktop you get a two year licence to use EndNote Online included.

To set up your EndNote Online account

  1. Load EndNote Desktop
  2. Complete the Synchronisation process outlined in Synchronising EndNote Desktop and Online.
