A guide to using the Vancouver citation style for in text citations and reference lists.

Note on authors/editors:

Citing Medicine lists all authors/editors in the reference list, however they do state “The following formats are not NLM practice for citing authors, but are acceptable options: If space is a consideration, the number of authors may be limited to a specific number, such as the first three authors or first six authors. Follow the last named author with a comma and “et al.” or “and others”. Check with your Unit Coordinator for more information.

The following  instructions are based on using the Citing Medicine 2 (UWA) style with EndNote 20 and 21.

Reference Type - Book

Author - if more than one author, enter each on a separate line. (See note at top of page re use of 'et al').

Number of Pages - enter total number of pages of book.

Reference Type - Electronic Book

Author - if more than one author/editor, enter each on a separate line. Add authors/editors in the format Last name, First name. (Example 2: for optional limit to author/editors, use et al.) Note: Place editors in the author field.

Type of Medium - Internet.

Edition - type as you'd like it to be shown. In the first example, 2nd ed. would also be acceptable. 

Place of publication

Publisher 

Year - if year of publication is not indicated, use year of last update or revision.

Date cited - use when citing electronic sources. Format is year, month (abbreviated), day.

Number of Pages - add the p - eg. 276 p (don't include the period after the p, Endnote will add it). Note: the eBook in the second example does not list page numbers, so these have been omitted. 

  URL – copy and paste. EndNote will add the Available from:
