Adding References to Mendeley Desktop

There are four ways of adding references to your Mendeley Library thorugh the Desktop

  1. Type in from the keyboard
  2. Add PDF documents and automatically generate references
  3. Import records from databases or catalogs, eg.
  4. Sync records from Mendeley Web

Type in from the Keyboard

Click on File and then on Add Entry Manually

Note! Be careful to select the correct reference Type. When entering author names be careful to

  • Enter in the form Family name, Given name(s)
  • Enter each new author on a new line
  • Put a comma at the end of corporate author entries (eg. University of Western Australia,)
  • Enter in normal sentence case

Add PDF Document

Open the appropriate folder in your Mendeley Desktop library and drag your PDF into it.

Mendeley will create the reference information and attach the PDF.

Check that the refrence information in the Details tab of the right hand panel is correct and edit as necessary.

Note!  because Mendely is parsing the data from the PDF and using a heuristic for identifying reference information, it can sometimes make mistakes.

Web of Science Import

Before doing your Web of Science search it is important that you select the Web of Science Core Collection.  Other segments of the Web of Science database will not support the export of references in the BibTex format required by Mendeley.

In your search results set the check boxes for references you want to collect.  Then set to Save to Other File Formats

Then select BibTex.

Note!  It is a good idea to select Full Record and colelct as much information as possible.

In the Savedrecs dialog box set the Open radio button and click on Browse to select the Mendeley Desktop program.  When this is selected Mendeley will open and import your references.

Scopus Import

In your search results set the check boxes for references you want to collect.  Click on Export and select RIS Format.

Note!  It is a good idea to collect All available information.

In the Savedrecs dialog box set the Open radio button and click on Browse to select the Mendeley Desktop program. When this is selected Mendeley will open and import your references.

Proquest Import

In your search results set the check boxes for references you want to collect.  Click on Export and select RIS Format.

Note!  It is a good idea to collect All available information.

In the Savedrecs dialog box set the Open radio button and click on Browse to select the Mendeley Desktop program. When this is selected Mendeley will open and import your references.

OneSearch Import

Records from OneSearch need to be imported individually.  After reviewing your list of search results click on the title(s) of required references one at a time to display the title's details and select Export RIS from the Actions menu.

Click OK to accept UTF-8 encoding and, in the Savedrecs dialog box, set the Open radio button and click on Browse to select the Mendeley Desktop program. When this is selected Mendeley will open and import your references.

Google Scholar Import

Before importing records from Scholar you must change the settings to use Refman as the Bibliography manager.

Records from Google Scholar need to be imported individually.  After reviewing your list of search results click on the Refman link of required references one at a time.

In the Savedrecs dialog box set the Open radio button and click on Browse to select the Mendeley Desktop program. When this is selected Mendeley will open and import your references.

Sync Records from Mendeley Web

Check your Mendeley Desktop Sync settings by clicking on the Edit Settings button

Mendeley Desktop will snchronise with Mendeley Web each time it is opened.  You can force it to sync at any time by clicking the Sync button
