Unit Readings allows you to organise your reading lists into sections with subheadings and define a layout of your choice that is meaningful to you. For example, organising your unit readings by week, by reading type (required, recommended, etc.) or by topic, can make it easier for your students to find readings related to lecture content areas.
If you are creating a new list you will be given a template option in a Weekly layout format:
In existing lists you can create new section folders and then move existing citations into the appropriate locations with ease. The new section heading can be created from the NEW SECTION button:
To move an item from one section to another, click the '...' menu at the top right of the item.
Select 'Move citation'
Choose the section to move the citation into, and click Confirm.
Or, drag citations from the blue grab bar which appears when you hover on the right hand side of a citation. Section headings can be moved around in the same way:
Watch our quick video which demonstrates setting up topic sections:
It's ideal to organise a reading list into sections for teaching weeks or topics to improve students' experience locating the readings they need.
There are two options to further visually divide up readings within list sections.
1. Indented sections
The list can be visually divided by indenting sections so they appear to be a subcategory of the section heading above. Indent a list section by hovering the mouse over the left side of the section, and clicking the arrow buttons which appear.
Indented sections then appear to be subsections of the section above.
2. Use Notes in the section
Alternatively, adding "Notes" between readings in a section can enhance readability and visually break up the readings while keeping them within the same list section.
To add a Note:
Unit Readings includes Public and Private notes options which allow you to add additional information to any citation. You can use the Public note function to draw your student's attention to a particular section of a selected reading. The notes will appear in the citation area of the resource so are easily seen by students. The Private note option will only be visible to you.
To add a note click on the citation's title in your reading list:
Scroll down and the Public or Private note option appears on this page:
Under the appropriate section click Add note. Enter your note in the white box and click Save.
Unit Readings shows you an overview of the total number of students "active" in your reading list and the total number of "events" (students interacting with items in your reading list).
In Unit Readings, access the main 'Lists' page, which displays your current and past reading lists.
Click on the graph symbol (Analysis) at the top to see these statistics for each list.
Unit Readings can show usage data for individual readings in your reading list, allowing you to assess student engagement. Open a reading list and click on the graph symbol to switch on display of list analysis.
Then scroll to a reading in your list to see how many students have viewed the item:
Some student engagement and activity can also be assessed before switching on display of list analysis, including full-text views, likes and discussions.
Usually a reading list will exist for your unit. The Library "rolls over" lists from previous teaching periods to create new, draft lists for upcoming units. If you can't see your list under 'My Lists' when you log in to Unit Readings, please contact UWA Librarians to be given access.
If you would like to copy and reuse a specific list in an upcoming unit;
Optionally, use the Library Discussion on the right hand side of Unit Readings to ask questions of Library staff about your reading list materials.
Click on Library Discussion to Add and Submit a comment.
When a Library staff member replies to your comment, you will receive an email notifying you there is a new Library Discussion message in Unit Readings. Please note that Library Discussion is not a live chat, and Library staff will respond in 2-3 business days.
Unit Coordinators are always welcome to contact the Library by phone or email for questions about, and assistance with, Unit Readings.
